    ASTM B805 — Incoloy 925 (UNS N09925) Bar & Forgings

Standard Specification for Precipitation-Hardenable Nickel-Iron-Chromium-Molybdenum-Copper Alloy Bar and Forgings

ASTM B805 is the ASTM standard specification that governs precipitation-hardenable Incoloy 925 (UNS N09925) bar, billet and forgings for nuclear and general industrial use. It defines the limiting chemical composition, mandatory heat-treatment condition, mechanical property minimums (UTS, YS, elongation, RA, hardness), permitted dimensional tolerances, marking and certification requirements. ASTM B805 is the most-cited bar/forging specification on Incoloy 925 MTCs alongside API 6A (wellhead service) and NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3 (sour service). TorqBolt manufactures Incoloy 925 bar and forgings to ASTM B805 with EN 10204 3.1 (manufacturer's) MTC documenting actual heat-lot chemistry, mechanical results and heat-treatment cycle, 3.2 third-party witnessed certification on request.

    Scope of ASTM B805

ASTM B805 covers wrought UNS N09925 in the following product forms:

    • Round bar, hot-rolled, hot-forged or cold-drawn; 6 mm to 350 mm diameter
    • Flat / square / hexagonal bar, hot-rolled or cold-finished
    • Forging stock, cut bar/billet for further open-die or closed-die forging
    • Forgings, finished hot-forged components per customer drawing

Companion ASTM specifications: ASTM B983 covers sheet, plate and strip; ASTM B829 is the general requirements specification for wrought nickel-alloy pipe; ASTM B564 covers forged or rolled fittings (UNS N09925 not currently included).

    Chemical Composition Requirements

ASTM B805 chemistry is identical to Special Metals SMC HA 46. See the full chemical composition page for element-by-element commentary and trademark/UNS naming.

Product analysis: The producer's heat (ladle) analysis is reported on the MTC. Product (check) analysis on the finished bar may be requested by the purchaser; permissible variation between ladle and product analysis is given in ASTM E1473 Table 1.

Charpy V-notch impact testing is not mandatory under ASTM B805 but is required by companion specifications: API 6A requires 27 J min at -29°C (PSL 3) or -46°C (PSL 3G); NACE MR0175 typically requires 40 J at -46°C for sour service. See the full mechanical properties page for elevated-temperature data and Charpy envelope.

    Mandatory Heat-Treatment Condition

ASTM B805 requires the alloy to be supplied in the SOLUTION-ANNEALED AND AGED (Class A) condition. The standard cycle:

    • Solution Anneal: 1900±25°F (1040±14°C), 1 h per 1" of section thickness, water quench
    • Age (Step 1): 1365°F (740°C), 8 hours, furnace cool 100°F/h to 1150°F
    • Age (Step 2): 1150°F (621°C), 8 hours, air cool

Furnace pyrometry per AMS 2750 is required. Charge thermocouple traceability and chart-recorder traces must be retained for 5 years ASTM B805 Section 7. See the full heat-treatment page for cycle rationale and process control.

    Marking & Certification

Per ASTM B805 Section 16, each piece (bar or forging) must be marked with:

    • Specification number: ASTM B805
    • UNS designation: N09925
    • Heat number
    • Manufacturer's identification
    • Heat-treatment condition (Annealed + Aged)
    • Size (diameter / dimensions)

Marking is by stamping (low-stress die), tagging or paint stencil. The MTC accompanying the shipment must reference all of the above plus chemistry, mechanical results and heat-treatment cycle. EN 10204 3.1 (manufacturer's) certificate is the default; 3.2 (third-party witnessed) on request.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ASTM B805 and ASTM B983? Both cover UNS N09925 with identical chemistry and mechanical-property requirements. ASTM B805 covers bar and forgings; ASTM B983 covers sheet, plate and strip. The mechanical-property minimums (165 ksi UTS / 110 ksi YS in aged condition) are identical between the two standards.

Is hardness testing performed on every bar? Yes, ASTM B805 Section 8 mandates hardness as 100% inspection (every piece tested), while tensile testing is sample-based (one test per heat per heat-treatment lot). This is because hardness is the key sour-service acceptance criterion (35 HRC max per NACE MR0175) and must be verified on every piece.

Can ASTM B805 material be supplied in solution-annealed-only condition? Yes by purchaser request, but the standard's mechanical-property minimums (165 ksi UTS, 110 ksi YS) apply only to the aged condition. Annealed-only material is supplied at ~110 ksi UTS / ~50 ksi YS; the MTC must clearly state "solution annealed only, not aged" and the customer is responsible for the final age cycle.

What is the typical lead time for ASTM B805 bar? Standard sizes (12 mm to 100 mm round bar): 4–6 weeks ex-stock or 8–10 weeks new-melt. Larger sizes and forgings: 12–16 weeks. The bottleneck is the 18-hour age cycle in calibrated furnaces.
