    Incoloy 925 Pins (UNS N09925)

    Dowel / cotter / clevis / spring / taper pins ASME B18.8.2 / DIN 7 / ISO 8734

Incoloy 925 pins (UNS N09925) are precision cylindrical or tapered fasteners used for alignment, joint assembly, retention and shear-load transfer. Distinct from bolts (which clamp via thread tension), pins transfer load through SHEAR across the pin cross-section and are typically retained by interference fit, cross-bolting, or a separate cotter / split-pin retention. The five common pin types each suit different applications: dowel pins (precision-fit alignment of mating components); cotter pins / split pins (retention of slotted nuts and clevis pins); clevis pins (pivot joints in linkages and lifting hardware); spring / roll pins (compression-fit retention in interference holes); and taper pins (precision-locked joints with a tapered hole + tapered pin). TorqBolt manufactures Incoloy 925 pins in M3 to M50 (1/8" to 2") sizes ASME B18.8.2 (inch) / DIN 7 (dowel) / DIN 94 (cotter) / DIN 1481 (spring) / DIN 1 (taper), in the solution-annealed and aged condition with hardness controlled within the 35 HRC NACE MR0175 sour-service cap.

    Mechanical Properties (Aged)

Tensile 165 ksi min / Yield 110 ksi min / Shear strength ~100 ksi (single-shear, calculated from UTS) / Hardness 32–35 HRC (NACE cap). For dowel pins requiring hardness above 35 HRC for wear resistance in NON-sour applications, omit the second age step to retain higher core hardness, specify "non-NACE high-hardness" at RFQ stage.

    Applications

    • Sour-service rotating-machinery alignment (pump + compressor case-half registration)
    • Wellhead-internal mechanism pivots (sour H₂S exposed)
    • Valve-stem cross-pins for actuator-to-stem coupling
    • Subsea connector alignment dowels
    • Slotted-nut + castle-nut retention (cotter pin variant)
    • Clevis pin in subsea mechanical-connector linkages (with retaining cotter)
    • Spring-pin retention for sour-service rotating-shaft hardware
    • Taper-pin precision joints in instrument valving

    Manufacturing Sequence

    1. Bar input per ASTM B805 in annealed condition (round bar matched to pin diameter)
    2. Cut to length + face both ends
    3. Centerless grinding for dowel pins (h6 / h7 tolerance); turning for taper pins; coiling/stamping for spring pins
    4. Chamfer / radius end forms per applicable standard
    5. Solution anneal + age cycle per heat-treatment specification
    6. Cross-drill for clevis pins (cotter-hole feature)
    7. Final inspection: diameter Go/No-Go, length, end-form geometry, 100% hardness, sample tensile
    8. Bagged shipment with heat number on packaging (pins typically too small for individual stamping)

    Frequently Asked Questions

Which pin type for which application? Dowel for precision alignment; cotter to retain slotted nuts; clevis for pivot joints; spring for vibration-tolerant interference fits; taper for high-shear precision joints. If unsure, describe the application and we'll recommend.

Why specify NACE-cap hardness for pins? Pins in sour-service equipment (wellhead internals, valve stems, subsea connectors) experience the same H₂S exposure as the surrounding components. Pins above 35 HRC can fail by SSC in sour brine. The 32–35 HRC cap applies to all sour-service pins; non-sour applications can specify higher hardness for wear.

Lead time? Standard dowel / cotter / clevis pins (M5 to M16): 4–6 weeks. Spring pins / taper pins / grooved pins: 6–8 weeks (specialty manufacture).
