Incoloy 925 Push Bolts (UNS N09925)

Jacking / extraction / push-out bolts for hub + bushing + hanger removal in sour-service wellhead service

Incoloy 925 push bolts (UNS N09925), also called jacking bolts, extraction bolts, or push-out bolts, are heavy-duty fasteners designed not for clamping but for the OPPOSITE function, pushing a stuck component out of an assembly during disassembly. Common applications include extracting a stuck wellhead casing hanger from a spool, jacking a tubing hanger out of its profile, removing a stuck bushing from a housing bore, or separating two flange faces that have galled or corroded together in service. The push bolt threads into a tapped hole in the outer component and bears against the surface of the inner component, applying axial force to push it out. Because the bolt experiences high compressive load on the bearing tip during use, it requires high-strength material plus a hardened bearing tip, Incoloy 925 in the aged condition (110 ksi YS, 35 HRC max for sour service) is the workhorse choice for sour-service wellhead maintenance kits. TorqBolt manufactures Incoloy 925 push bolts in M10 to M48 (3/8" to 2") sizes per customer drawing, in the solution-annealed and aged condition with hardness controlled within the 35 HRC NACE MR0175 sour-service cap.

    Mechanical Properties (Aged)

Tensile 165 ksi min / Yield 110 ksi min / Hardness 32–35 HRC (NACE cap). The aged condition is essential, push bolts experience COMPRESSIVE tip loading during use, so the tip must resist mushrooming / deformation. The 165 ksi UTS + 32–35 HRC bearing surface gives reliable extraction force without permanent tip damage. See mech properties page.

    Applications

    • Wellhead casing-hanger extraction from spool body during workover (typical primary use)
    • Tubing-hanger extraction during completion change-out
    • BOP-stack ram-block extraction for ram replacement
    • Subsea-tree retrievable-component extraction (with diver / ROV operation)
    • Stuck flange-face separation (galling-corrosion-stuck flanged joints)
    • Bushing / sleeve extraction from valve body or pump casing
    • Spare-part / maintenance kits for sour-service wellhead operators

    Standards

    • ASTM B805, UNS N09925 forging stock (input bar)
    • ASME B18.2.1 / B18.2.6, hex / heavy hex head dimensional reference
    • ASME B1.1 / B1.13M, thread tolerance (often 8UN for >1" sizes)
    • Customer drawing, push bolts are typically supplied to specific customer / wellhead-OEM drawings (Cameron / FMC / Dril-Quip / Aker)
    • NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3 Table A.10, sour-service qualification
    • EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2, certification

    Manufacturing Sequence

    1. Bar input per ASTM B805 in annealed condition
    2. Hex / heavy hex head upset forging (cold or warm depending on diameter)
    3. Shank machining + tip geometry (flat / cup / pad-recess for nylon insert)
    4. Thread cutting / rolling along nut-end length (annealed condition)
    5. Solution anneal + age cycle per heat-treatment specification
    6. Final inspection: head dimensional check, tip geometry, thread Go/No-Go, 100% hardness
    7. Marking: heat number on head face + grade designation + NACE stamp

    Frequently Asked Questions

Are push bolts a standard catalogue item? Generally NO, push bolts are typically supplied to wellhead-OEM-specific drawings (Cameron / FMC / Dril-Quip / Aker). Each OEM uses a custom thread + length + tip geometry combination. Provide the OEM drawing or wellhead model + spool tap-port spec at RFQ stage.

Why nickel-alloy push bolts vs carbon-steel? Sour-service wellheads are exposed to H₂S even during workover, the push bolts engage with sour-fluid-soaked surfaces, so they must themselves be NACE-compliant. Carbon-steel push bolts can SSC-fail under the high tip load combined with H₂S exposure. Incoloy 925 (or alternative Inconel 718) is the standard for sour-service wellhead maintenance kits.

Lead time? Custom OEM drawings: 8–12 weeks (drawing review + setup time + 18-hour age cycle). Standard hex-head push bolt configurations: 6–8 weeks.
